Flab is new for Mr. Bale, a shape-shifter who has made himself skeleton-thin on occasion. But what's truly new in his performanceâindeed, in his careerâis the subtlety of his comic style. Instead of going for laughs, the actor concentrates on Irving's antic self-seriousness and his ardor, not to mention his bling. (In a vision of romance that comes out of nowhere, Irving and Sydney embrace in the back of a dry-cleaning shop he owns while plastic-bagged clothes on mechanical tracks swirl around them.) Sydney is a changeling, a sort of Sybil with multiple personalities minus most of the mental-health issues. Ms. Adams has been a changeling, too, in a wide range of roles. Yet she's newly spellbinding in the intensity she brings to Sydney's passion and fierce ambition.
