True, I spend at least 10 hours each week sitting on the train (not counting delays). But steam trains are different; they are a fragment of an older, more elegant way of life. There's nothing I like better than drifting slowly into a doze while being rocked in the bosom of a steam railway carriage, the tang of coal smoke in my nostrils and the gentle creak of the luggage rack in my ears, underpinned by that regular chuff-chuff-chuff. I fantasise about commuting by steam.
