While hurricanes/cyclones do run up the west coast of Mexico, they usually spin off into the Pacific once they hit the cold water off of California. Or they'll turn inland and head for New Mexico and Texas. I wonder if that's what happened here. A cyclone starting off of Morocco, finding the warm waters of the Med, and turning east towards Italy, instead of turning west out into the Atlantic.
