It set itself up as a hilarious romp about two young-at-heart older women determined not to give in to younger people’s prejudices against ageing – then gave them a fundamentally moronic storyline that end up being both clichéd and patronising. It set me thinking about how older people have fared at the hands of comedy writers generally. I mean, no one could say that Last of the Summer Wine didn’t treat its subjects as infantile. But that was the whole point – a humorously imagined state of second childhood, played out against an idyllic and timeless Yorkshire landscape. I wasn’t a particular fan but could appreciate the skill, even love, with which Compo, Clegg and the other OAP innocents were crafted by Roy Clarke over four decades.
