Mike James is an architect who works from home at Vine Cottage in Newton Ferrers, on the South Devon coast, and lives in his shorts and sandals during the summer. He has adapted this little thatched whitewashed home and pushed out a large glass extension at the back to make a kitchen with sliding doors opening on to a sun-bleached courtyard. Across the yard he turned an old darkroom into a large working studio, bedroom and shower room.
