He then went to Oxford to begin a long and creative ministry among the students. He was a curate at St Aldate’s — the leading evangelical church — from 1969 to 1973, serving also as chaplain of the Oxford Pastorate . Then, after seven years as chaplain of Jesus College, where he exerted considerable influence among both dons and undergraduates, in 1980 Bennetts was appointed vicar of St Andrew’s Church, Oxford. This still involved student ministry, but with the challenge of integrating this with a congregation which included many town residents.
