All I can tell you without resorting to flow charts is that Mr. Cooper's Richie DiMaso, a loose-cannon agent of the FBI, dragoons Mr. Bale's sleazy con man, Irving Rosenfeld, into organizing the government-funded con; that one of the operation's targets is Carmine Polito, a Jersey pol played by Mr. Renner; that Irving's partner in things amorous as well as criminal is a temptress named Sydney Prosser (Ms. Adams), and that his quick-witted floozy of a wife, Ms. Lawrence's Rosalyn, bears watching at every step of the way. But then every one of these characters bears watching, even though the film is too long and the pace is occasionally exhausting; better a surfeit of riches than no riches at all.
